A Note From Kendall

Dear St Andrew Community,

I want to take a moment to express my gratitude to so many of you who attended my Ordination service last Saturday, who came to the drive-thru to extend your congratulations, and for the many ways this community has poured into me as your Pastor of Congregational Care. I am excited to take this next step as an ordained representative of the Gospel in continued service to St Andrew – still as your Pastor of Congregational Care, but now as an ordained clergyperson on St Andrew’s team.

I have been on the path to ordination for half my life after first feeling called to ministry at 15 years old. Many of you have asked about my journey to ordination post-General Conference 2019 when the United Methodist denomination voted in favor of stricter penalties for LGBTQ+ persons serving in ministry (i.e. the Traditional Plan). General Conference 2019 caused a deep wound in my relationship to the denomination that had fostered my faith for fifteen years. While our Mountain Sky Conference ordination committees were supportive of my call, it became clear that I could not choose to covenant with the United Methodist denomination as an ordained representative while the denomination was not yet ready to formally choose me back.

And then, the Word of God cried out through the prophet Isaiah: “I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” The thing about rivers suddenly appearing in a desert is that the image does not fit into what we expect of our natural world. When I look at my life and call to ordained ministry, I have never fully fit into what people expect of someone who becomes an ordained minister. Where I do fit and believe I am called to be a chosen witness for Christ, is in a story of Jesus the Christ who never really belonged in a world that says things must look a certain way. Being someone who has not fully fit into the Christian world/queer world/binary gender world/denominational world, I’ve learned to be comfortable being the bridge that oscillates between worlds. The bridge is a witness that shows others how connection is possible.

My call to ordination means being part of a new thing God is doing that I call a reconciliation of worlds. This call was chosen for my life. The Disciples of Christ understand ordination to the Church Universal – reinforcing a vision of universality and the witness to Christian unity across our diverse globe. The Disciples gave home for a vision of ordained ministry as a bridge across worlds and towards reconciliation of the kin-dom on Earth.

I am so grateful for the support of Rev. Mark, the Executive Team, and our Staff Parish Relations Committee who have journeyed with me each step of the way and encouraged my journey. And, of course, I offer my sincerest thanks to all of you who have poured into me here at St Andrew.

Blessings,

Rev. Kendall KP
