Gain new insights and perspectives on the Holy Land through the primary sources: ancient texts (including scriptures!) and archeological evidence. The time frame is from the First Temple (960 BC) through the destruction of the Second Temple (70 AD). The course starts with the original Canaanite inhabitants, proceeds through the coming of the Hebrews, the divided kingdom, the exile and restoration, moves through Hellenization, the Maccabees, the Roman period with Sadducees, Pharisees and Essenes, into the reign of Herod with life in Galilee and Jerusalem, and continues with Roman and Jewish fighting, the parting of Judaism and Christianity; adding Byzantine time and the arrival of Islam. There will be time for reflection each week.
Lecturer Jodi Magness, Ph.D. Classical Archaeology, is an archaeologist and scholar of religion, teaching in Early Judaism at UNC, Chapel Hill.
