Visiting Scholar: Dr. Carrie Doehring –
Processing Your Experience of a Denominational Crisis

Monday | June 3 and 10 | 7:00 – 8:30 pm

As the United Methodist Church experiences a true crisis of belief, theology, and biblical interpretation, we must process for ourselves what this means for our faith identities. Dr. Carrie Doehring will explore this through the lens of moral injury. Rev. Annie will provide the connection of how this relates to the current state of The United Methodist Church and our lament for how to be part of a church with shared beliefs and values.

Moral stress is a related shame/guilt-based experience of not being able to live out one’s values because of conflicting responsibilities. Moral injury and stress undermine people’s sense of authenticity and self-worth, making people question their vocations and commitments.

Moral injuries and moral stress often involve religious, spiritual and moral struggles, which have many negative health outcomes. Spiritually oriented care and counseling offer unique resources for addressing the religious and spiritual struggles of moral injuries and moral stress.
